Protect me, for I am devoted to you.  Save me, for I serve and trust you.  You are my God   Psalms 86:2

As a child, I spent many summers at my grandparent’s home.  Their home rested on the shores of Wolf lake in Napoleon, MI and I would sit for hours in awe of the graceful pair of swans and their fluffy little babies that lived in tall grasses along the bank.  As a small child, probably around the age of 5 or 6, I desperately wanted to hold one of these babies, so down to the water I went.

Armed with a few pieces of bread I began throwing small pieces trying to lure the babies to me.  The group of 4 or 5 little babies happily gobbled up the bread, and I was delighted that they were now right at my feet nibbling away.  Little did I realize that the Daddy swan was carefully watching my every move.  As I continued to feed the babies, I began to slowly kneel so that I could touch them, and in one quick swoop, I scooped one of the babies up into my hands.

Suddenly out of nowhere the Daddy swan began screaming and hissing at me and began chasing me all over the yard.  Needless to say, I am still to this day pretty terrified of swans and geese.

Just as the Daddy swan kept a watchful eye over his children, so does your heavenly father keep a watchful eye over you.  We may not even realize the danger that is ahead of us, or that we are being lured into danger, but God is always there waiting to protect us from harm.

When times of trouble do come, the Bible says “He will cover you with his feathers.  He will shelter you with his wings.” Psalms 91:4.  As you can see by the above picture, when a storm or cold comes the babies all tuck under the wing of the adult swan for protection.  They may still hear the wind, or feel the cold but with the shelter of the wings they are protected.

If you are in need of protection from the storms of this life, reach out to God for protection and take shelter in his arms.  God never promises that storms won’t come, but he does promise that we can take shelter in him.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear…Psalms 46:1-2 NIV
