Luke 10:30-42

As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcome him into her home.  Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught.  But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing.  She came to Jesus and said, “Lord doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work?  Tell her to come help me” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about.  Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Every morning as our family of 5 bustles around to get out the door, it feels like chaos. Feed the dog, pack the lunches, finding lost shoes and homework; by the time kids are off to school the house feels like it was hit by a CAT 5 tornado and I’m frazzled by the stress that the morning brings. I grab a much-needed cup of coffee, take a deep breath and begin to put the chaos back into order. Depending on how rough of a morning it has been usually determines the amount of time I have left to spend in devotional time, before I have to rush out the door to begin my day.

So, as luck would have it this week I was reading in Matthew and I came to the story of Jesus in the home of Mary and Martha.  As I read the story I realized that I am absolutely a Martha.  I must have everything organized, clean and tidy before I could possibly sit down with Jesus.  “My dear Martha (insert Lesley) you are worried and upset over all these details!  There is only one thing worth being concerned with.”  Ouch!  I have been so worried about the things around me being perfect that the time that Jesus so desperately wants to spend with me is being lost.

When you go to a friend’s home do you worry about how clean their house is or if their dishes are washed?  Of course not!  Your only desire is to spend time with your friend.  Jesus is our friend and all he wants is for us to stop what we are doing, relax and spend time with Him.

I want to be like Mary! I want to fill my coffee cup sit down and allow Jesus to fill my spiritual cup. I want to hang on His every word for me and learn what he is trying to teach me. I want to lay at his feet and soak up His word. I want time to spend talking to Him in prayer, and allow time to listen to what He has to say.

It’s time for us to stop looking at our lives as Christians as a list of commitments that we check off:

· Went to church – Check

· Volunteered – Check

· Gave Tithes & Offerings – Check

Being a follower of Christ is not about the tasks we perform, it’s about having a deep and meaningful relationship.  Jesus isn’t some far off being that we talk to now and then.  He is our best friend sitting across the table, coffee cup in hand, waiting for us to tell Him all about our day, our fears, our problems, our joys and our successes.  There is nothing in this world that is more important than making the commitment to have your Coffee with Jesus each day.  So what will you talk about with Jesus today?
